Where and When to Hunt This Season
Regular firearm season for deer hunting is right around the corner! Will you be participating this year? If so, you will want to ensure you know exactly Michigan’s hunting laws and where and when you are allowed to hunt to avoid a possible hunting violation.

Where to Hunt
Michigan is divided into three separate hunting and trapping zones. Zone 1 includes the Upper Peninsula, Zone 2 consists of the northern part of the Lower Peninsula, dividing about midway across the state, and Zone 3 consists of the lower half of the state. You can find the detailed map and description here. Hunting rules and regulations depend on which zone you are hunting in, so ensure that you are aware and following any that pertain to you. Michigan is also home to an abundance of state land that permits hunting. You can find the rules and regulations for hunting on state land here .
Where Not to Hunt
Although there are public areas in Michigan where you are allowed to hunt, please be sure that you do not mistake them for places where hunting is illegal. You are not permitted to hunt on:
- State Park or recreation area lands unless opened by law enforcement
- Private land that you do not obtain permission to hunt on
- Hunting Access Program (HAP) land without permission
When
Did you know that there are legal hours in which you are allowed to hunt? Your timing depends on where in the state you will be hunting and what day of the year. For example, if you are hunting in the Detroit-Metro area on opening firearm day for deer, you are in Time Zone A and can hunt from 6:53 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.
