Self-protection and the right to bear arms

The right to bear arms is one that many hold dear as a vital element of living in the United States. The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution grants this right to citizens, yet it has become a prime topic of debate in and disagreement in recent years. It may feel to some that the right to carry a gun is all but under attack. At the same time, a new trend is emerging in gun ownership across the country.

A report by KTNV.com indicates that a new demographic of gun owners is growing. It seems that more females are choosing to purchase guns than in past years. The reasons that more women are opting to become gun owners may vary but the ability to feel safe themselves and to ensure their families are safe is a prime factor.

Research conducted by the Pew Research Center indicate that an average of eight percent of men who purchase guns cite protection as a primary reason for gun ownership. In contrast, 27% of women say that protection is the main reason they bought a gun. Protection is also a factor, even if not the only factor, for more than seven out of 10 gun purchases by women. Many women end up enjoying various sports that involve gun use as well.
