Police & You – Who is Watching You?

Police & You: It’s Almost Halloween and someone is Watching You

As Halloween approaches, do you ever get that creepy feeling that someone is watching you? Sort of like in the scenes of classic horror films, such as Psycho, Friday the 13th, or Scream. Well you may not be that far off, because Big Brother is watching, and watching very closely.

It doesn’t matter if you are guilty of a crime or not. They are watching. The Wall Street Journal’s Julia Angwin reported this past weekend about a new technology has been developed that has the ability to record thousands of license plate numbers a minute while just driving down the street. Anytime, anywhere.

So far, the technology is only being offered by two companies in the United States. One of these companies, MVTrac, is specifically marketing the technology to repossession agents and law enforcement.

This new technology allows any person that has purchased it to attach 4 cameras to their vehicle and record thousands of license plate numbers a minute. This technology not only photographs your vehicle and license plate number, it also time stamps the recording, and records the exact GPS coordinates of your vehicle at the time the image is taken. It can do this at speeds of up to 160 mph, whether vehicles are parked or moving and can also record images of adjacent and oncoming traffic.

After all this seemingly useless data is taken, it is then stored on MVTrac’s database. For how long one asks? As long as MVTrac wants to hold it. For what purpose you ask? This data is currently being used to assist repossession agents in finding vehicles. Further, police departments are using it to try and solve “current crimes”, and “future crimes.”

Alll a repo agent has to do to obtain the data is pay a monthly fee. Of course, you do not have to think too long or hard to figure out how law enforcement may utilize this technology to further erode an individual’s rights.
